The BBC Russian service has published material on the political changes that have been taking place in Azerbaijan recently.

It is noted that President Ilham Aliyev is taking unprecedented steps: release of political prisoners, forgiveness of citizens' loan obligations, increase in the minimum wage, etc. Also, for the first time in a long time, Ilham Aliyev gave an interview to the local media.

Among the reasons for such behavior of the President of Azerbaijan, the publication notes political changes in Armenia in April-May 2018.

“Regional pressure on Azerbaijan is no less significant. “The velvet revolution” and the change of power in Armenia caught Baku off-guard, since they did not expect such changes in Armenia, due to Yerevan’s strong dependence on Russia”, - the newspaper writes.

Among other reasons for the changed behavior of the Azerbaijani leader, it is noted that the country entered the post-oil period of its development, when state revenues decreased with the fall in world oil prices. In this regard, it is noted that Aliyev’s external legitimacy has fallen, forcing him to appeal for support to his people.
